Summary or Abstract

This study investigates the development of the tradition known as "the collegiate way." It defines the collegiate way as presidential concern for the religious and social education of students and as administrative policies on dormitories, chapel attendance and the regulation of student behavior outside the classroom. The data are the several presidents' articulated educational philosophies, policies selected according to the definition of the collegiate way, and the student extracurriculum. Using a modified Clark-Trow typology, student activities were assessed as complementary, oppositional, or neutral to the college and university ethos..
