Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study is to explicate and evaluate the educational philosophy of Robert M. Hutchins, reflecting his concept of reality, knowledge, values, and what human nature is; justifying the aims and practices of education in terms of his general philosophical ideas; and exposing what an ideal society ought to be.This study comprises three major topics: philosophical foundations, educational implications, and social philosophy. Hutchins based his educational philosophy on two major premises: human nature is rational, and knowledge resides in unchanging, absolute, and universal truths. Hutchins also stressed the importance of metaphysics and believed that the modern university could be unified on the base of metaphysics. Since reason is the vital distinguishing element in human nature, the development of intellectual powers becomes the highest priority in education..
