Summary or Abstract : Research in the area of client personality predicting a preference for a counseling approach has been ongoing for many years and has revealed some interesting and often contradictory results. The present study was designed to investigate this relationship and encourage a more systematic approach to research in this area. Specifically, this study looked at whether or not client personality styles predicted a preference for a Psychoanalytic counseling approach, a Client-Centered counseling approach, or a Cognitive counseling approach. One hundred forty-five undergraduate and graduate students completed the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised and the Preferences for Psychotherapy Approaches Scale-Revised. Results revealed that participants who scored higher on Extraversion are more likely to prefer a Psychoanalytic counseling approach. None of the other four personality styles (Neuroticism, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) indicated any preference for any of the three counseling approaches studied. These results held true after controlling for gender, race, and age. However, this study also discovered that race was a predictor of preference regarding one of the counseling approaches. Specifically, Caucasians were found to be less likely to prefer counseling via a Psychoanalytic counseling approach compared to African Americans.
