Summary or Abstract : This study investigated (a) the instructional strategy (instructional pedagogy) of K-12 subject-matter computer software (courseware) that a sample of urban African American high school students perceive as engaging and (b) what the students perceive as the teacher's role in mediating their successful use of educational software (courseware and application tools) in the classroom. Its goal is to illuminate the pedagogical issues that should be taken into consideration when selecting, designing, or integrating courseware that engages urban (Black) high school students. This study also seeks to describe effective ways in which teachers can engage this population of students around the use of software..
