Summary or Abstract

The issues surrounding the epistemological assumptions underlying educational software have largely been uninvestigated (OCED, 1989). But if we are to act sensibly in deciding on what role computers should play in education, we need to examine how technology has influenced the ways in which we think about the world and about our own nature. This thesis argues that the models of mind provided by the computer metaphor are suspect as influences on the development of educational software. Insofar as the models of mind explored in cognitive science inform educational software development, detecting the epistemological bias of these models reveals implicit assumptions which may be inappropriate when embodied in educational software..
