Summary or Abstract : This collection of four papers examines a number of aspects of adult education. Following a brief introduction, chapter two provides an overview of the history of adult education and illustrates to readers why adult education is so important in the United States, from assisting employees in remaining in the work force to remaining abreast of individual and societal changes. The following chapter presents an overview of adult education options and delves into the reasons that many individuals give for not participating. Chapter four provides adults who may decide to consider pursuing formal adult education with some items to consider to make their endeavors successful, including methodologies they may encounter and examples of existing programs. The fifth and final chapter presents a discussion of ways individuals and institutions can increase the successful participation of more adults in formal education..
