Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this dissertation was to apply the principles of globalization and ecopsychology to a psychological analysis of trading floor behavior. Globalization and ecopsychology are rapidly developing interdisciplinary fields of study which researchers today continue to demarcate and define (Friedman, 2000; Davis, n.d.; Hibbard, 2004; Roszak, Gomes & Kanner, 1995). Thomas Friedman (2000) identifies globalization as a new international system with new rules and logic that integrates markets, transportation and communication systems that changes the way we function in the modern world. Building on the work of Theodore Roszak (1992) and others, I defined ecopsychology as the coupling of the science of the relationships between organisms and their environments with the science of the mental, emotional and behavioral processes of those organisms. I view the intersection of the ecological and psychological systemically and holistically. Thus, in the ecology of one environment, the trading floor, was understood to be nested within greater ecological systems, in this case natural and human-made worlds. I argued that in order to understand modern contexts such as the trading floor, psychology needs to expand its framework to include an understanding of the dynamics at work in economic globalization as well as the larger context of the natural world and human's interaction with it..
