Summary or Abstract : This dissertation explores the work of Russian pedagogue P. F. Kapterev (1849-1922) and the St. Petersburg Parents' Circle (1884-1917), a voluntary association of parents, doctors and educators with which he was involved, on early child development and child-rearing. Drawing on sources including Kapterev's writings, published accounts of the Circle's activity, archival records of government agencies with which the organisation had relations and the St. Petersburg city directory, it explores Kapterev and the Circle's vision of childhood and family, their critique of the practice of Russian family education and their recommendations regarding family life and methods of upbringing. It also traces the Circle's history, examining the characteristics of its membership, the activities in which it engaged, including exhibitions, publications and charitable work, and the factors shaping its development, including its interaction with the state..
