Summary or Abstract : Efforts to improve women's reproductive health in urban Russia provide a window through which the political-economic conditions and contested meanings shaping that society's transitions from state socialism become visible. This dissertation examines a series of global and local initiatives undertaken between 1994-95 in St. Petersburg Russia, that targeted women's health and sexuality as sites where new forms of social relations could be cultivated. I show how these projects, devised by consultants to the European regional branch of the World Health Organization and local Russian health providers, expressed competing visions of Russia's needs as a post-Soviet society. Through ethnographic analysis I investigate the implementation and reception of these reforms by health providers and women patients in St. Petersburg's maternity hospitals and women's clinics. The study argues that both scholarly knowledge of the transitions from state socialism, and international collaborations for reform, may benefit from the cultural insights availed through a theoretically-framed, ethnographic inquiry of everyday interactions..
