Summary or Abstract : In an effort to better understand the relationship between the process of learning to teach for social justice and our social and institutional contexts, this empirical study analyzes qualitative data gathered from a study of preservice teachers' experiences with the community participation component of their training program. My analytical approach draws from theories about language and social learning, and utilizes conceptual frameworks concerning ideology, and racial identity. This investigation into the role of ideology in preservice teachers' learning is intended to inform the way we think about teacher education, particularly efforts at developing culturally responsive teachers.
