Summary or Abstract : Building on work done by Holland and Eisenhart (1990) with college students in America and the "culture of romance", this study looks critically at the production of talk about romance that goes on in college dorms between people who call each other "friends" (particularly women). The study was conducted at a public, four-year college in the Pacific Northwest. Following Cremin (1976) and Mehan (1987), educative interaction is discussed as the deliberate production of behavior appropriate to a given context. It is argued that because talk about romance is produced by people who call each other "friends", these "friendship" relationships are being constituted and negotiated at the same time in the course of that talk. This dissertation thus examines the "sentimental education" of students by their peers in the dorm--how they constrain one another to produce appropriate behaviors with regard to relationships of sentiment, both "friendship" and "romance"..
