Summary or Abstract : This dissertation articulates a social psychological model of sense of place in northern Wisconsin. A three component view of sense of place dominates theory: places include the physical setting, human activities, and social and psychological processes. This research seeks a serious integration of these domains. Much previous place research uses phenomenological approaches that fail to clarify constructs, test hypotheses, or build theory. Empirical studies often fail to address basic theoretical precepts: multidimensionality, the process by which place is created, the importance of symbolic meanings, and effects on behavior. This thesis seeks clarity and rigor by translating place terminology into social psychology concepts: beliefs, attitudes, and identities towards spatial settings. Research explored sense of place in northern Wisconsin, a landscape rich in natural amenities (especially lakes), with important symbolic meanings ('up north') perceived to be threatened by social and environmental change. Rapid development of lakeshore areas with private residences has fostered public concern and political efforts to protect lakes. Nine hypotheses about relationships between lake characteristics, cognition, attitudes, identity, and behavior were tested using two data sources: a mail survey of Vilas County property owners (n = 1000, 72.1 response rate) and Vilas County lake databases..
