Summary or Abstract : Improving child health and education are now accepted as universal priorities by policy makers. In this dissertation, I examine three fundamental factors affecting child health and education in India: affirmative action policies, economic inequality and family size.In the first essay, I examine the effect of affirmative action programs introduced in 1992 on educational attainment of the targeted group. Using three dimensions of comparison: over time, between the targeted group and other socio-economic groups, and between states with and without a history of such programs, I find that the program increased educational attainment amongst children in the targeted group. Moreover, I find that the benefits are not restricted to the economically advantaged..
