Summary or Abstract : Enhancing treatment outcomes for patients who are predicted to leave treatment worse off than when they entered has important implications for quality of patient care. The effects of three interventions aimed at reducing patient deterioration were examined in a sample of 1374 patients whose outcome was contrasted across experimental groups and with a treatment-as-usual control group consisting of archival data from 1445 patients. Results indicated that feedback to therapists improved outcome across clients and especially for those who were predicted to be at risk for treatment failure. Therapist feedback effects were enhanced by the use of prompts to action based on a manual-based Clinical Support Tools, but not by the provision of direct feedback to clients. These results were interpreted as reinforcing the value of empirically derived practice tools for use in routine care but the uncertain value of direct feedback to clients about their progress..
