Summary or Abstract : The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between therapist facilitation of patient emotional experience/expression and outcome in psychodynamic psychotherapy. The author reviews relevant theory covering the history of an affective focus in psychodynamic psychotherapy, followed by a review of meta-analytic approaches to research synthesis using correlation coefficients. The present meta-analysis included computer as well as manual searches for relevant publications which resulted in a review of 789 abstracts in the computer searches. Overall, more than 500 articles were retrieved in full for review. A total of 64 publications appeared initially to meet inclusion criteria and 13 publications (11 independent studies examining short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy) were eventually included in the meta-analysis. Data was analyzed using the approaches of Rosenthal (1991; Field, 2001), Hedges and colleagues (Hedges & Olkin, 1985; Hedges & Vevea, 1998; Field, 2001), and Hunter and Schmidt (1990; Field, 2001). Additionally, moderator analyses were conducted examining the potential impact of type of outcome construct and methodological quality of individual studies. Results indicated that the overall average weighted effect sizes ranged from r = .29 to r = .38, all p 's < .001, the 95 confidence intervals ranged from a low of .12 to a high of .54, and the homogeneity statistics were all non-significant (all p 's > .10). Moderator analyses indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between therapist facilitation of patient emotional experience/expression and outcome when more than one outcome construct was included, but not when either a single or unclear outcome construct was used. There were no statistically significant relationships between methodological quality and the size of the effects. Limitations of the present meta-analysis as well as implications for clinical practice are discussed..
