Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of African American undergraduate college students toward psychotherapy. Research on the utilization of mental health services by different ethnic/racial populations reveals significant underutilization by African Americans. Among African American undergraduate college students, it is possible that underutilization of mental health services is influenced by cultural characteristics as expressed through their racial identity attitudes (i.e., the extent to which they identify with their socially assigned racial group). Consequently, the current study was designed to explore whether or not African American college students' racial identity attitudes (a within-group psychological and cultural variance) were predictive of their attitudes toward psychotherapy..
