Summary or Abstract : This phenomenological study explored the experience of feeling really understood in psychotherapy from the client point of view. The literature review revealed considerable evidence from quantitative research that the client's experience of the therapist's empathy, or feeling understood, is one of the strongest predictors of positive therapeutic outcome. Depth psychologists, too, acknowledge the importance of the experience. Yet, little is known about this significant client experience. The study was undertaken to increase therapists' understanding of this poorly understood phenomenon..
