Summary or Abstract : Rupture resolution is an emerging area of study in psychotherapy process research. The goal of the following study was to examine the relationship between resolution of ruptures in the therapeutic alliance and the symbolization of new material by the patient measured by Referential Activity (RA). The study looked at 37 patient-therapist dyads and used three perspectives---observer-rated, patient-rated, and computer analysis---for data collection. It was hypothesized that as resolution brings up new material for patients, higher levels of resolution would predict higher levels of Referential Activity in patient discourse. Results found that, contrary to expectations, higher observer-rated resolution behaviors in the patient predicted lower levels of RA and higher levels of Reflection on the part of the patient. Levels of Referential Activity were not found to be related to resolution of tension as rated by the patient or patient-rated levels of alliance. Patient ratings of resolution showed little correspondence to therapist or observer-rated resolution. The findings provide initial support for the idea of the Referential Process (RP) as being a key aspect of resolution when seen from an observer perspective. Significant implications and areas for further study are discussed..
