Summary or Abstract : The use of expert psychological testimony on eyewitness identification has remained a controversy over the past couple of decades. This paper explores the factors involved in the eyewitness identification process to form an adequate reference source for attorneys and court officials. These factors include memory theories, witness characteristics, offense and offender variables, and jury perceptions. In addition to these, judicial safeguards are reviewed, specifically investigating expert psychological testimony. Interviews were conducted with defense and prosecuting attorneys, as well as prospective jurors. It was concluded that the court-appointed expert provides the greatest benefit to those involved.
