Summary or Abstract : An investigation was conducted to explore the relationship between specific California Psychological Inventory scales and academic performance among college freshmen. A sample population of 1006 students from a mid-western university was examined. High school grade point averages, ACT scores, and CPI traits Responsibility, Achievement via Conformance, Intellectual Efficiency, and Femininity/Masculinity were examined to determine the correlation with college freshmen grade point averages. High school G.P.A.s had the strongest relationship with freshmen G.P.A.s, followed by ACT scores. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was also conducted to determine the amount of variance attributed by the CPI traits. The CPI traits added distinct information above and beyond the information provided by high school G.P.A.s and ACT scores. CPI traits Achievement via Conformance and Femininity/Masculinity were found to account significantly for the variance in freshmen G.P.A.s. Although significant, the CPI traits accounted for a small amount of the variance in freshmen G.P.A.s. Implications of the findings and further direction of research are discussed.
