Summary or Abstract : The Questionnaire de dفtresse psychologique ( QDP ) is a new self-report scale that measures state-like and trait-like psychological distress. The first version of the test (83-items) was developped at Universitف de Montreal (Bergeron, 1996). The items of the QDP are divided in three scales. The first scale measures changing emotional states related to anxiety, depression, hostility and interpersonal sensitivity. The second scale is a more general, trait-like, measure of the same emotional components. As for the third scale, it measures somatic symptoms and cognitive problems related to these components. The first study, conducted with 252 university students, demonstrates that the preliminary 83-item version of the QDP has sound psychometric qualities. However, items were added to the questionnaire, in order to improve it's factorial validity. In the second study, the 100-item QDP was administered to 542 subjects of the general french-speaking population of the province of Quفbec. Analyses of individual items, factor analyses, were considered in choosing the 55 items for the final version of the QDP. The goal of the third study was to assess the reliability and construct validity of the final version of the QDP (55 items). The subjects were 49 university students who were administered the questionnaire twice with a six-week interval. Results indicate that the final version of the QDP (55-items) has very good test-retest reliability and that the three scales differed in a way that supports the validity of the instrument. The fourth study served to verify the validity of the instrument with 137 men and women following treatment for alcohol or substance abuse. Results indicate that the QDP has good psychometric qualities with this population: alpha coeffictients are high, inter-item correlations are moderate, and a test-retest design shows significant change seven months after the beginning of treatment. In conclusion, the QDP can be used with confidence to assess psychological distress in the general population and in substance abusers following treatment. An English version of the QDP is currently being developed..
