Summary or Abstract : This work attempts to investigate how leisure sports may become a space for the learning of citizenship. In order to answer this question, an investigation was carried through within two complementary directions. On the one hand, from a theoretical perspective, we attempted to analyze the conceptual foundations and the challenges of citizenship nowadays; the topic of education for democratic citizenship, in order to create key experiences as guidelines toward transforming leisure sports into a space for forming citizens; and the concepts of leisure and sports, reflecting initially about the possibilities of transforming leisure sports into such educational ground. On the other hand, we made use of case studies, based on triangulation of many different qualitative investigational procedures, in order to examine the context of leisure sports at a Brazilian University (Unisinos), analyzing how, within this concrete context, citizenship related situations may be experienced. From such basis, contrasting the reality of leisure sports and the formulated keys of education in citizenship, we attempted to present an approach toward leisure sports as a space for the learning of citizenship. As a conclusion, we analyze how citizenship has become a legacy of civilization and an important value for humanity. At the same time, we examine how citizenship, nowadays, points out to the need of an active foundation, which must be developed by educational strategies capable of teaching citizens how to become the main actors of democratic life. Taken from the place this activity occupies within social life, sports may be seen as a space for the learning of citizenship, by accomplishing two different objectives: whether it is structured upon the formative objectives of educational sports and of humanistic leisure, and whether it may become an effective space for democratic experiences and the exercise of citizenship. In this sense, citizenship formative experiences must have three focuses: the collective subject, aiming at strengthening groups and communities; the individual, strengthening the citizen as the subject of citizenship; and the public sphere, strengthening the democratic environment and social networks..
