Summary or Abstract : This study investigates the experiences of Canadian Olympic athletes in the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing upon media sources, archival documents, biographies, scholarly books and articles, and oral history interviews, a critical interpretation of the social identity of Canadian athletes is put forward in each of the three major chapters. Chapter topics include; the Canadian Federal Government led boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the use of banned substances by Eastern Bloc athletes, and the tattoos and Olympic jewellery worn by Canadian athletes. Interpretations highlight the ways in which Canadian athletes constructed social identities and experienced agency in the political and highly scrutinised arena of Olympic sport..
