Summary or Abstract : This thesis focuses on sport in the aftermath of violent conflict in Sierra Leone. Central to understandings of sport is the recognition that the idea that sport can build peace is a highly contentious idea. Therefore, in such a study, one must therefore begin with a critical analysis of the inherent contradictions and paradoxes that are embedded within sport. While sport can be said to promote inclusively---the 'equal playing field' argument---in reality we know that sport can be more exclusive, in terms of, for instance, class distinctions, gender ethnicity, language and religion..
