Summary or Abstract : Exposure to a sport's celebrity through the media can have an important influence on the public's health-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. The battle against drug use by Argentinean soccer player Diego Maradona, "The god," has provoked concerns on issues in the Argentinean population, particularly among young people. The present study analyzed how parasocial interaction and identification with Maradona affected the public's concern and perceptions about drug use after Maradona's drug-related health crisis in 2004. The study also assessed how parasocial interaction and identification with Maradona mediates these public perceptions. Results indicated that those who had a greater degree of parasocial interaction with Maradona were more likely to show an increase in support of Maradona's social causes, concern about drug abuse, awareness of drug abuse, support of drug abuse prevention programs, and participation in soccer. In contrast, identification with Maradona was related only to three out of the six hypothesized effects: support of Maradona's social causes, awareness of drug abuse, and support of drug abuse prevention programs. Surprisingly, identification did not have an effect on abstinence from drug use and soccer involvement. Implications of these findings indicates that a sport's celebrity can have an important social influence on acute social issues and suggests that involvement with a celebrity mediates the public's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors..
