Summary or Abstract : The primary goal of my dissertation is to examine the effects of IT on firm performance. Specifically, this dissertation demonstrates how the careful selection of IT affects the firm's competitive position and ultimately firm value. I propose a framework for Accounting Information Systems (AIS) research by assessing the returns on investments in IT measured with market measures such as abnormal returns, or with accounting performance measures such as ROS and ROA. My review encompasses research that addresses the general question: "Can differences in firm performance be explained by differences in IT initiatives?" As this dissertation will demonstrate that there is a relationship between IT and firm performance, but the degree of that relationship may be subject to contextual effects. The information generated by this dissertation will be critical for teaching AIS professionals how to invest wisely in IT that will add to the firm's overall firm performance.
