Summary or Abstract : Entering the 2004 major league baseball season the Philadelphia Phillies were a team with high expectations. As with the 2003 Philadelphia Phillies they were unable to accomplish their primary goal, returning to the National League play-offs. This research explores the possibility for the team's failure in an untraditional place. Utilizing the Content Analysis of Verbatim Explanations (CAVE) Technique a search was conducted to determine if the team possessed a positive or negative attributional style for events with occurred through out the 2004 major league season. Using three print media sources and over 2,000 quotes from administrators, managers, coaches and players an assessment was conducted. The results suggest that the 2004 Philadelphia Phillies possessed neither a positive or negative attributional style as a team. This is potentially an indicator that a team with this style will perform as well as talent alone will allow them.
