Summary or Abstract : This thesis is an investigation of Life Orientation curriculum implementation in Mpumalanga, South Africa using Most Significant Change story-gathering methodology. South Africa has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the world and Life Orientation curriculum is an important part of the formal school system's response to the epidemic. This project found that teachers are modifying the curriculum to suit the unique needs of their rural communities and are assuming roles in the school and community in response to contextual pressures like HIV/AIDS, poverty, and abuse. Most Significant Change methodology was difficult to fully implement given the lack of leadership in some schools and the unwillingness of some participants to complete the stories. It was a useful tool for gathering context-specific stories of change in the face of HIV/AIDS and for promoting dialogue towards organizational learning.
