Summary or Abstract : This study explored how living situation affected life-satisfaction and depression among adults 65 and older. The participants were chosen from Sun City, Arizona, an active retirement community that provides activities that in turn create social opportunities for its residents. This was compared to Simi Valley, California, a nonretirement community, and is made up of non-age restricted traditional neighborhoods. Data was gathered by administering two standardized survey instruments embedded in a 55-item questionnaire. For life satisfaction both locations reported moderate levels with a mean score of 28.87 out of a possible range of 20-60 with higher scores reflecting less satisfaction with life. Similarly, both locations reported low levels of depression with a mean score of 57.40 out of a possible range of 30-60 with higher scores reflecting less depression.
