Summary or Abstract : Once widowed, many individuals experience a change in their living situation. When coupled with adapting to a life without a spouse, this has been found to influence the widowed adults' dependency on others, a key component of the well-being of older adults. This study explores the relationship between the widowed individual's living situation and dependence level after the death of a spouse, as well as the effect of a change in the living situation on widow(er)'s psychological well-being. These topics were examined prospectively with over 200 widowed older adults who participated in the Changing Lives of Older Couples study at two time points, prior to the loss of the spouse and six months following the death. The living situation-dependency level relationships of the widowed individuals, along with changes in their living situations, were investigated as predictors of psychological well-being. Results suggest that the degree of dependence of older adults significantly increases after losing a spouse, although it remains constant across genders. The living situation-dependency level relationships of the widowed adults were found to significantly influence the positive affect of these individuals, but did not significantly impact anxiety, depressive symptoms, or yearning. Financial situation, social support, and functional health also impacted the psychological health of the widowed individuals. Further explanations of these results and the implications for the psychological well-being of older widowed adults are discussed..
