Summary or Abstract : The dissertation asked whether an intervention for changing men's conventional masculinity was effective in improving their psychological well-being. The sample consisted of 128 men who completed the New Warrior Training Adventure (NWTA) in the Washington, DC, Center of The ManKind Project from June 1997 to May 1998. The population was highly educated, predominantly white, had high levels of experience with personal growth activities, and included a greater proportion of gay and bisexual men than the general population. The measure of conventional masculinity was composed of three subscales---masculinity ideology, gender role strain, and male social-emotional support. The measure of psychological well-being was composed of six subscales--depression, anxiety, life satisfaction, self-esteem, mastery, and The ManKind Project's definition of psychological well-being. Data were collected by surveys mailed to participants before, handed out during the debriefing session at the end of, and mailed six months and eighteen months after the NWTA.
