Summary or Abstract : This thesis presents an experimental, analytical and numerical analysis of nonlinear photoconductive (NLP) switching in bulk gallium arsenide. NLP switches are optically activated switches in which the number of electron-hole pairs initially produced by optical absorption are multiplied through a nonlinear process, leading to closure of the switch. NLP switches differ from linear photoconductive (LP) switches in which one photon produces on electron-hole pair..
