Summary or Abstract : In this research, we address the problems with engineering of large-scale evolving software. We have designed and implemented a distributed software development environment called OMSOFT (Object Management SOFTware). It implements CORBA 2.0. The goal of OMSOFT is to reduce the time and costs involved in deploying large network applications. Each interface of an object in OMSOFT has a global identification number. Rules for interface and application compatibility have been defined. When a new object is built, developers check-in version numbers and global ids of all its interfaces. This helps the manager in checking whether all the interfaces are compatible. OMSOFT implements a distributed selection algorithm to generate a partial order of all unique compatible systems. The complexity of the distributed algorithm is NLog ( N ), where N is the number of object versions. By using some policy, manager chooses the required compatible system from that partial order. OMSOFT supports one such policy using monotonically increasing object version numbers..
