Summary or Abstract : The first section of part one reviews American women's humor beginning with the early social satire of nineteenth century writers like Frances Whitcher and Marietta Holley through contemporary writers of humorous fiction. I explore the work of Dorothy Parker, Grace Paley, Deborah Eisenberg and Bobbie Anne Mason in depth, tracing my own literary roots and influences. I argue that contemporary women's humor is unique as it combines an attitude of critical distance and intimate connection which is a departure from earlier women's humorous writing. In part two, I focus on my own short stories, discussing themes of gender, ethnicity and political opposition as they appear in my stories. I also cover technical and theoretical issues about invention versus memory and the short story form itself..
