Summary or Abstract : This dissertation proposes a reading of nineteenth-century literature under the sign of popular culture. Bakhtin defined laughter in its social and historic dimension as a means of circulation of social energy for the containment of power and authority. Starting with his definition, I strive to articulate an en-gendered theory, looking for the ways women appropriate the liberating power of laughter. Women's laughter manifests itself in its potential for carnivalization of discourse and ritual mockery of patriarchal ideology. Ultimately, sympathetic humor identifies fissures in the deceptively monolithic mods of sentimentalism and critiques it from within..
