Summary or Abstract : This dissertation is an ethnographic and discourse analytic study of the literacy and social practices of adolescent English language learners writing in online spaces. In particular, analyses focus on the social, pedagogical, pop cultural, and technological elements of an online writing space that help both native and non-native speakers develop identities as successful authors and readers of English. A primary purpose of the study is to explore the points of convergence and divergence between opportunities for language socialization, literacy, and identity development in academic settings and in out-of-school contexts. Another primary focus is on how the digital mode of communication and publishing might promote English learners' access to and affiliation with composition and language learning in ways that many school-based literacy programs have not succeeded..
