Summary or Abstract : This dissertation investigates the extent to which state power can intervene into the intercorporate governance mechanisms, given the fact that the market forces are persistently undergirded by social-structural determinants. The thesis begins by developing a network-based theory of state power through revisiting Simmel's formalistic analysis of dominance and concludes with three empirical chapters. The objectives of these chapters are (1) to trace the historical trajectory of the institutional dominance upon governed market via the network lens; (2) to examine how the state actors may play the role of brokerage--i.e., the tertius --in mediating the formation of intercorporate alliances, and how they may maneuver the pre-existing ties for gaining the control benefits during the process and (3) to investigate how the effect of institutional endorsement state power may impose upon the dynamics of market stratification through affiliational mechanisms..
