Summary or Abstract : The present study attempted to determine whether significant differences in personality variables exist between pet owners and non-pet owners. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, the Schedule of Recent Experience, a socio-demographic form, and an experimenter designed questionnaire were administered to 22 female pet owners and 22 female non-pet owners. Results revealed that pet owners scored higher on the personality variables achievement and succorance. The most frequently stated reasons for owning a pet were companionship and love. Pet owners described reciprocal relationships characterized by unconditional acceptance, love, affection, laughter, play, and protection. Responsibility was the most frequently stated disadvantage of pet ownership and the main reason for not owning a pet. Discussion of the results and implications for clinical practice and further research are presented..
