Summary or Abstract : There is empirical evidence for the popularity of comic strip humour depicting family life. The relationship between family-context comic strip scenes, humour appreciation and aggressive cartoon themes is less clear. In this study 138 students evaluated 30 comic strips depicting aggressive domestic scenes (n = 15) and affectional domestic scenes (n = 15). Cartoon ratings were examined in relation to: individuals' comic strip reading activities and preferences; selected personality dimensions of Nurturance, Play, Cognitive Structure, Defendence and Succorance; and, respondents' use of humour in various situations, as measured by the Situational Humour Response Questionnaire. In general, it was found that aggressive cartoons received lower appreciation values than affectional cartoons and that higher appreciation values were associated with lower perceptions of aggression. It was concluded that the best potential predictors of humour value across affectional cartoon themes are Situational Humour, Cartoon Preference scores and the personality trait of Nurturance. The best potential predictors of humour value across aggressive cartoon themes are Cartoon Preference scores and the personality trait of Nurturance. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
