Summary or Abstract : It has been asserted that eating disorders and major depressive disorders are correlates of the same syndrome. Although comparisons have been made from environmental, biological, and psychological perspectives, no studies to date have explored the underlying motivational forces or psychological needs differentiating the two disorders. This study attempted to identify and explore those needs that most clearly define and motivate the eating disordered woman to use food and dieting as a substitute for unmet needs, as well as to differentiate these needs from those experienced by depressed women..
