Summary or Abstract : The focus of this dissertation is the impact of Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT), more specifically the "Getting The Love You Want" (GTLYW) workshop, on marital satisfaction. IRT is a type of marital counseling which facilitates the understanding of family of origin issues and teaches couples how to communicate more effectively based on empathic awareness of their early emotional development. The GTLYW weekend workshops are designed to teach couples IRT theory and communication skills in an effort to improve marital satisfaction. Given the high rate of divorce in our society, researchers and clinicians need to increase their understanding of interventions and techniques that couples report as improving their marital satisfaction. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of participants in the Imago Relationship workshop and their view of how it may have affected their marital satisfaction. The study included 5 couples, one widowed male, and one female member of a dyad. Interviews were conducted via the telephone, and analysis was made by examining specific statements and searching for consistent themes. All of the participants reported increased satisfaction in their marital relationships and report that they handle conflict more effectively. The participants stated that the workshop was one of the factors that contributed to an increase in marital satisfaction and improved conflict resolution skills. Educational workshops such as GTLYW may be a valuable prevention tool for couples and an efficient adjunct to therapy for clinicians who are trying to help couples struggling to remain in their marital relationship..
