Summary or Abstract : This dissertation examines the effects of top managers' dispositional optimism on firm problem recognition, firm search, firm problem solving actions and firm performance. Specifically, I hypothesize that top managers' optimism positively influences firm problem recognition, moderates the influence of problem recognition on the search for solutions, and moderates the influence of firm search on problem solving actions. In other words, optimistic top managers recognize more problems, search more for solutions, and initiate more problem solving actions. Finally, optimism should positively influence firm performance. To test these hypotheses, I analyze data from a strategy simulation game, as well as surveys completed by the simulation participants (management graduate students and corporate executives.) Results indicate that top managers' optimism positively influences problem recognition, but unexpectedly, negatively moderates problem solving actions and negatively influences firm performance..
