Summary or Abstract : This case study sought to explain why top executives departed prematurely by studying one company, Enclomet Technologies that formed from the merger of six companies. The research was conducted by interviewing the top executives of the acquired companies. The study found that the cumulative affects from organizational issues, activities, and events reduced acquired executives' relative standing. Dissatisfaction arose from the recurrent progression whereby acquired executives' expectations and implementations resulted in realizations that were unsatisfactory to the acquirer which resulted in the acquirer repeatedly reformulating strategy. Dissatisfaction followed the deterioration of relative standing. Opportunity, involvement, and economic compensation moderated premature departure. This study was a means to advance understanding of acquirer initiatives to improve merger effectiveness and sustain acquired top management.
