Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a computer-based instructional program designed to teach purchasing skills at a grocery store. The computer assisted instruction (CAI) program and its companion video are known as Project Shop. It is designed to increase correct response frequency for grocery shopping skills in a generalized natural setting for students with intellectual disabilities. I have evaluated the effectiveness of the program by using it with three students with severe intellectual disabilities. The dependent variable was the percentage of correct responses associated with a 5-step purchasing task analysis in a local grocery store. The independent variable was video and (CAI) training provided by the Project Shop program. All participants initially performed at low percentages of correct responses in community probes of purchasing items at a checkout stand. However, with implementation of CAI, community probe data on percentage correct responses increased to 100 for all participants. Additionally, all participants performed at high levels in generalization probes (new community grocery stores) and in 30-day follow-up probes. Results are discussed in terms of percentage correct responses to a 5-step purchasing sequence measured by grocery store probe sessions in baseline, treatment, generalization, and post 30-day follow-up..
