Summary or Abstract : Trait theory--relating personality to leadership--was investigated, using command hierarchical organizations. Military, police, firefighting, medical, and space exploration are areas where superiors have legitimate power, subordinates are expected to obey orders, teams operate under a chain of command, and inherently dangerous operations are performed. Initial training at a military college provided a naturally constrained situation in which a cadre of three noncommissioned student officers train about a dozen randomly assigned new recruits during a 3-month indoctrination period. The cadre took the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised before beginning to train. Shortly after their completion of initial training, subordinates rated their cadre using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Multivariate regression equations were derived having substantial validity (Radjusted = 0.29-0.90) relating the five factors of personality (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness) to transformational, plus positive and negative transactional leadership, and evaluations. Different leadership constructs were found for drill sergeants, squad leaders, and assistant squad leaders; and they were predicted by different regression models for personality.
