Summary or Abstract : Since its origin, the United States Army has offered various forms of Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses for those soldiers who have demonstrated deficits in functional reading, language, and/or math skills. A central objective of the Army's Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP) is to support and enhance the career development of the enlisted soldier-students; however, the relationship between BSEP and subsequent career progression is only discussed peripherally within the literature. The focus of this phenomenological study was to document the lived experience of enlisted soldiers who take part in BSEP. A more specific goal of the present study was to explore how the enlisted participants perceive the ABE course has impacted upon their career development. The results of the present study indicated that there was a strong perceived connection between the experience of BSEP and subsequent career development. The experience of BSEP was further characterized by motivational and support factors, the relevancy of past educational experiences, and the potential for core changes in self-perception..
