Summary or Abstract : Gender, age, and life events are important risk factors for either an onset of depression or relapse in depression. Such risk factors may be important, but the present study demonstrated that there may be lifestyle factors, such as diet and activity level that are also contributing to the onset of depression or relapse in this disorder. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that both males and females were more likely to report eating something following the experience of a happy versus a depressive event. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that females were more likely than males to report that they would eat simple carbohydrates following the experience of a depressive event. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that males were more likely to report that they would significantly consume more alcohol than women regardless of a happy or depressive experience. A repeated measures ANOVA also revealed that females reported that they would be more likely than males to go to bed and sleep, but less likely than males to exercise. The present study also investigated the effect which a person's level of depression may have on reported tendency to eat as well as the tendency to become active following a happy and sad event. Few significant findings were identified, probably due to the fact that most of the participants were nondepressed college students..
