Summary or Abstract : This study compared four outcomes--education, self-sufficiency, repeat pregnancy, and familial emotional support--between teenage mothers who attended TAPP, a comprehensive teenage pregnancy & parenting program, between 1988-1996, and their counterparts in a comparison group, Port Chester High School. A multi-method approach was adopted: a quantitative study of school and counseling records for 128 students, a follow-up quantitative interview with 48 students 4-11 years after attending the program/school, and a qualitative study of 11 TAPP students. The quantitative phases indicated that TAPP significantly reduced drop-out rates, and increased educational success: both graduation rates on returning to their home school districts, and subsequent highest level of education, including post high school. There were no significant differences in self-sufficiency, repeat pregnancy, or familial emotional support. Qualitative findings indicated that day-care was the essential TAPP component for enhancing educational outcome but that stigmatization was the main factor contributing to dropping out.
