Summary or Abstract : The forms of contemporary political resistance and the spaces in which social movement actors engage in protest are changing. The normative environment in which contemporary activists engage in their practice is not only the political arena of the state or the contested space of civil society, but more specifically the raced and gendered environment of the mainstream institutions in which they spend much of their time. I assert that focusing on individuals' membership in, or commitment to, social movement organizations, or the actions of organizations themselves, misses a big part of the picture, and by examining the full spectrum of protest, scholars can come to a more complete understanding of social movements..
