Summary or Abstract : This study examines worker participation in environmental practice and decision-making and its relationship to worker health and safety. Worker participation is viewed as active involvement of workers with an ability to alter the power dynamics between management and labor in a plant. A collective case study method was used to evaluate worker environmental participation at three manufacturing facilities. The cases include two facilities with strong unions--an aircraft engine plant in Massachusetts and an automobile manufacturer in Ontario, Canada. The third case, a rubber parts manufacturer in Massachusetts, is not unionized. A graduated typology consisting of seventeen factors was developed to provide a framework for evaluating the content and degree of worker environmental participation for each case. Interviews were conducted with workers and management at each facility. A focus group consisting of elected union health and safety representatives was also conducted at one plant..
